The cosmetic procedure of penis enlargement, or phalloplasty, is an operation carried out to add length and girth to the penis. It is undertaken by men who, for whatever reason, feel that their penis is too small. There are two steps to the process of penile augmentation. One step is to detach the penis from the suspensory ligaments to increase length, and the other is to add girth by injecting fat tissue under the skin of the penis' shaft.

Procedure information
Penis enlargement surgery is usually performed at a private clinic by a surgical team. The patient is anesthetized during the operation. The entire procedure takes a few hours and the patient is then discharged after completion. Most men opt to both lengthen and widen their penis in the same operation.

To lengthen the penis, the corpora cavernosa is severed from the ligaments holding the penis in place, thus exposing more of the tissue that is inside the body. To increase girth, fat cells from a donor site on the patient's body are injected around the shaft of the penis. This can increase the bulk anywhere from 1 to 3 inches.

Recovery time
The patient is not required to stay at the clinic overnight, but should take it easy at home for at lest a few days. There is some pain as the body adjusts to new tissue, but the doctor will be able to prescribe pain medication for this. It's recommended to abstain from sex for a minimum of 1 week after the procedure to ensure the tissue has accepted the changes.
